Start with the financial aid office
If your current finances differ substantially from the tax information on FAFSA, submit the required FAFSA and contact the school you plan to attend. Ask about its special-circumstances or professional-judgment review. Examples may include a job loss, reduced income, or significant uncovered medical expenses.
Ask for the school's checklist
Explain what changed and when. Ask which form, supporting evidence, and deadline apply. The school may request documentation of the change; send it only through the school's official process. Do not replace required historical tax figures with estimates on your own.
- Keep a copy of your request and note any follow-up date the school gives you.
- If you are comparing schools, ask each one about its own review process.
- A review does not guarantee more aid. The financial aid office makes the decision.
A sentence you can use
“My current financial circumstances differ from the information on my FAFSA. Could you explain your review process, the documents you need, and your deadline?” You do not need to enter personal or financial details on Beyond the Written.
