An invitation is a starting point

A letter. A few questions. More possibilities.

You can take a moment to understand an academic invitation before deciding what comes next.

START HERE · NSHSS

Who is the invitation from?

NSHSS is the National Society of High School Scholars. Its invitation offers membership in that organization. It is not an admission offer from a college, and receiving it does not mean you have won a scholarship.

NSHSS and NHS are different organizations

NHS is the National Honor Society. Students are selected through a chapter at their school. An NSHSS invitation does not enroll you in NHS. If your letter says NHS, check with your school's chapter adviser.

What would I be paying for?

NSHSS describes a one-time lifetime membership fee and publishes opportunities including scholarships, events, and educational resources. Check which benefits you would actually use, their eligibility rules, and any extra charges. Access to scholarship applications is not a scholarship award, and membership does not guarantee college admission.

Do not buy a membership simply to try to secure a scholarship. First compare the specific benefits with free options and your own priorities.

There is an official fee-waiver process

NSHSS publishes a fee-waiver application for eligible families experiencing financial hardship. A request does not guarantee approval.

  1. Check eligibility. Current instructions list participation in Medicaid, SNAP, or the National School Lunch Program.
  2. Prepare two documents. A benefit approval letter for the current calendar year and an educator's recommendation on high-school letterhead.
  3. Apply through the linked official form. The form requires your invitation's confirmation code. Send documents directly to NSHSS; Beyond the Written does not collect them.
